Nicaragua - supporting education for all
World bank statement on the Millenium Development Goals :
"Education is development: It creates choices and opportunities for people, reduces the twin burdens of poverty and diseases, and gives a stronger voice in society. For nations it creates a dynamic workforce and well-informed citizens able to compete and cooperate globally – opening doors to economic and social prosperity."

Millenium Development Goals
The target for the MDG's is to: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling. But Nicaragua faces a very difficult challenge if it is to meet the targets set in the UN Millennium goals. The government of Nicaragua prioritizes the repayment of debt above investment in education. As a result many children end up outside the education system.

LEARNING RE-INFORCEMENT CENTRE
To help overcome the lack of educational opportunities for children from modest backgrounds in León NECAT has set up the Centro de Reforzamiento Escolar (Learning Re-inforcement Centre) in the barrio of William Fonseca. By running this centre for underprivileged children we are able to have a base which can act as a model centre for extra mural education. The centre is run by a qualified teacher and supported by volunteers. Children attend in three groups of 10 children per group, far less than occurs in state schools and by focusing on a smaller group we are able to offer more individual attention, prioritizing the needs of individual children. the children come along every weekday afternoon, receiving support with their schoolwork and enjoying other educational activities for which there is no time or money in the school curriculum.
 Educational Activities
By offering the children a varied programme of activities we enable the children to get to know their city  and their country, to grow in self esteem and confidence and build in themselves a sense of their moral worth.  During the last year we have organised educational visits to Granada, Puerto Morazan, to the Zoo and local visits to the museum of Myths and Legends
