Nicaragua - Land of Culture, Land of Poets

Pablo Neruda once said: "Nicaragua, where the song of the Spanish language is taken to its highest level".

Advancing education in Nicaragua through culture and the arts

On the  Pacific coast of Nicaragua there exists a strong a vibrant cultural and folklore tradition which is a source of great pride in their country for its people. Culture in Nicaragua is a fundamental pillar of education and by linking cultural activities into education it becomes possible to promote literacy, self-esteem and social and environmental awareness.

Our work with children engages them in a process of educational reinforcement using the medium of culture and the arts. They participate in a wide range of activities designed to promote their knowledge and understanding of their national culture and folklore traditions. Activities such as dance, theatre skills, art, music and poetry are integrated into their educational programme in order to maximise their potential.

Typically the children will prepare a presentation for a forthcoming festival and, on the day, present to the public a variety of performance activities.

Photos here show a number of recent presentations by the children.

Necat also sponsors public events in which children can participate and demonstrate their skills and artistic talents. Typical of these is the competition of Enanos Cabezones, where the children form teams and compete for prizes for the best presented Enano. Shown opposite is the most recent competition, which took place in June 2006.

Necat runs an after-school club in the city of León, the club is based in the barrio of William Fonseca, about 4kms to the north of the city. Local children are encouraged to attend the club as an investment in their future rather than being out on the streets selling small items to support their families.
